Mean Radiant Temperature

Updated at Dec 7, 2021

From ASHRAE Handbook 2016 HVAC Systems and Equipment (2016)

Both the air temperature and the mean radiant temperature (MRT) of a space should be taken into account when assessing occupant thermal comfort. The combined influence of these two temperatures is expressed as the operative temperature. Mean radiant temperature has a strong influence on human thermal comfort. The magnitude of the effect is slightly greater than that of air temperature at the low air velocities typical to most indoor spaces.
